Yoon Hwan Bae: Habitat

01 Mar, 2017 - 29 Mar, 2017

Doosan Gallery Seoul presents Habitat, a solo exhibition by Yoon Hwan Bae, who was one of the artists in Doosan Art Lab exhibition in 2015, makes paintings, drawings and video works that portray various narrative structures which endless derive from the same source. This exhibition focuses on the status of the artist as the creator of paintings, and the status of works, which are his products as well as their own entities that occupy space and construct their own meaning.

Habitat is the ecological and environmental place and condition in which particular living organisms live. In the ecosystem, there are often migrations of massive flocks to different places in order to survive despite the various difficulties. Like the life of living organisms in the ecosystem, Bae thinks about the place of the materials of his work - narratives, images, and materials - and the place of their migration

Segmented and contradictory, Bae's images and his narratives based on language form an incomplete and loose relationship with each other rather than being intimately linked to and reflective of each other. And as the individual relationships are connected, their differences are gradually exposed. Such uncertain and uncanny relationships lead to migrations to new places. Like the migration of living organisms that search for suitable conditions for life, the endless language, and the images that line up one after another migrate to find their own place and seek to discover its own location. And in turn, these migrations ask the artist where he's standing and where he is headed.
