After a lengthy stretch during which emerging painters have leaned into commercial preferences for the traditional, many seem to be breaking free from the market鈥檚 emphasis on imagery and narrative. 

Dona Nelson has come a long way. I do not mean to, by using this pedestrian implication of advancement, reduce by way of triteness, but rather to acknowledge the painter鈥檚 temporal commitment to her practice.
