Abstract Paintings from the MAM Collection
This collection fully expresses the exploration of abstract paintings in Macao. In the 1980s, abstract paintings entered Macao, playing a prominent role in Macao modern art. Abstract painting has transcended the limitations of painting, whose initial themes stressed realistic representation. Basic elements of painting were combined partially or entirely in an abstract manner, creating an abstract form, influencing the mindset of painting development in Macao.
With favourable conditions and efforts by outstanding artists, abstract painting in Macao entered a pioneering period in 1980s, whilst the 1990s heralded a fruitful harvest following flourishing development. Exhibits in different periods showcase the mentality of the artists: some artists took reference from natural objects, they intentionally employed ideas of creation and techniques of abstract paintings while preserving certain connections between the paintings and natural objects. Some artists based their works on natural objects via deconstruction or restructuring, i.e. they produced art with semi-abstract forms which are much less figurative. Certainly there are also works depicted in form of pure abstraction in order to show spiritual dimensions like specific emotions or ideas, or to display aesthetic experiences.
Since the establishment of the Macao Museum of Art in 1999, the collection of abstract paintings by Macao painters from the 1980s to the present has been accumulated through acquisition, donation, exhibition and selection of award-winning works, etc. This exhibition showcases nearly 30 works representative of the abstract collection including installations with rich painting qualities. The painting media and techniques used include ink wash, mixed techniques, mixed media, ready-mades, oil paints, acrylic paints, etc.; The artists have conducted outstanding experimentation and exploration on the integrated techniques of abstract paintings and mixed materials with successful achievements. The works display strong personal styles through subjective abstract composition of shapes and colours, or independent thinking with symbolic meaning regarding ready-mades. The variety of art forms has fully resembled the laborious navigation of abstract art languages explored by Macao artists since the 1980s, whose works feature immense open-minded artistic characteristics of the Sino-Western cultural integration in Macao.
