All Things Change

21 Dec, 2024 - 01 Jun, 2025

Since its opening in 2013, Museum SAN has presented exhibitions that explore the flow of modern and contemporary Korean art through various mediums such as Western painting, Dansaekhwa, sculpture, landscape painting, abstract art, printmaking and figurative painting. By categorizing its collection, the museum has introduced the works and techniques of representative artists. The current exhibition, Rediscovering the Collection - All Things Change, reflects a facet of the museum's collection philosophy and direction. It showcases a diverse array of works by carefully selected artists, curated around specific themes.

This exhibition poses a paradoxical question: While everything changes, is there anything that remains unchanged? Time, seasons, matter, and space are in constant flux, embodying the Buddhist concept of impermanence (Jehaengmusang), which asserts that nothing is eternal. The ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus also emphasized the primacy of change, believing that everything is in perpetual motion, with nothing stable or fixed. In the scientific realm, quantum mechanics similarly highlights the continuous transformation of time, space, and matter. It underscores that everything lacks absolute essence and evolves through interdependent conditions and relationships.

Recognizing that all things are subject to change allows us to embrace the present moment without clinging to it and fosters a mindset of acceptance. It also invites us to expand our awareness of permanence and to gain insight into the essence of existence. Through this exhibition, we hope visitors could find an opportunity to deeply engage with the present moment and reflect on it through the lens of the artists鈥 works.
