Antony Gormley: Space Station and Other Instruments
Galleria Continua is pleased to announce the opening of "Space Station and Other Instruments".
Presented in association with White Cube and Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac this exhibition of three major works by Antony Gormley takes on the huge raw spaces of Le Moulin. The show features two major works Space Station and Hatch, in addition to Memes, a 33 part installation of model-sized iron blockworks. Space Station is a vast 23 tonne sculpture, enterable by a small passage in the side of the work.
Replicating the window grids of high density environments such as Manhattan the work proposes both a city as a condensing matrix and also a foetal human form as an accumulation of cells.
Hatch is described by the artist as a looking machine. It is a 6x6x3m high room pierced by 14,000 square holes that are lined with aluminium tubes of differing lengths, producing kaleidoscopic views of both inside and outside and inviting the viewer to participate in the act and fact of looking itself.
The Memes make up a field on the mezzanine floor. Each work is made up of an identical set of blocks joined together in a unique configuration. The toy-like scale of these floor-bound works, (the tallest of which is 29cm high), becomes a catalyst for the viewer to sense their own size, weight and movement.
Together, these three works bring to the fore Gormley鈥檚 investigation of the relationship of the body to the space it inhabits, both in the built environment and in the wider world. The works are termed instruments because of their ability to act as catalysts for reflexivity and empathic participation.
