Bailey鈥檚 Parade: Photographs by David Bailey
Sotheby鈥檚 is delighted to present Bailey鈥檚 Parade, a selling exhibition of works by legendary photographer David Bailey. Conceived in close collaboration with the artist, the exhibition features some of Bailey鈥檚 most iconic works from the 1960s, a series of colour still lifes from the late 2000s as well as his most recent overpainted photographs.
Born in London鈥檚 East End in 1938, Bailey took up photography in the late 1950s and joined British Vogue in 1960. Discarding the rigid rules of a previous generation of fashion photographers, Bailey injected the dynamism of London鈥檚 newly informal street culture into his work. His portraits of the city鈥檚 rock stars and enfant terribles shattered the class barrier in fashion photography and his unmistakable style came to embody the seismic cultural shift of the 1960s. By the end of the decade, Bailey had become such a cult figure that his fame surpassed that of many of his subjects.
