British Impressions
Messum's annual British Impressionist exhibition looks deeper at its roots this year than ever before. It contains masterpieces by, amongst others, Frank Bramley and Stanhope Forbes and a selection of paintings which were exhibited around 1890 at the Royal Academy in London.
The early 1970s saw David Messum's first exhibition focussed on this newly discovered genre. The exhibition, entitled 'A Breath of Fresh Air', was the catalyst behind the initial market interest in the Newlyn Painters and the forthcoming exhibition will include a number of key works from this period.
British Impressionism and the Newlyn School has been at the heart of Messum鈥檚 ever since David Messum opened his first gallery in 1963. For almost a century and a half, these artists have continued to hold a well-loved and significant place within British art history and as Messum鈥檚 approaches its sixtieth year, they remain central to that original vision.
