16 Mar, 2013 - 05 May, 2013
Canaletto (Giovanni Antonio Canal, Italian, 1697-1768) and Giovanni Battista Piranesi (Italian, 1720-1778) created real and imaginary views of Italian cities and ruins that have remained popular with collectors since their own time. The 鈥渧edute鈥 (i.e., views) by Canaletto in this show were made in his hometown of Venice. The 鈥渃arceri d鈥檌nvenzione鈥 (i.e., imaginary prisons) by Piranesi in the show are 鈥渃apricci,鈥 invented images of dark, cavernous interiors with monstrous machines reminiscent of the cruel ancient Roman justice system.
