Encounters with Impressionism: From the Hiroshima Museum of Art Collection
Ever since its opening in 1972, as a pioneer of public art museums in Japan, Tochigi Prefectural Museum of Fine Arts has endeavored to collect, survey, and research works with a focus on art related to the prefecture. It has been looking not only at art in Japan but all over the world. In particular, European paintings by British artists such as Joseph Mallord William Turner and John Constable and French artists such as Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and Claude Monet have played an important role as the prop of its collection.
In this exhibition, the development of modern French art over a period of one hundred years is surveyed with a focus on Impressionism. Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works by Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, Paul Gauguin, and Paul C茅zanne, which emerged in the latter half of the nineteenth century, have nowadays become masterworks appreciated by people all over the world. Yet, they deviated considerably from the traditions at the Academie, which reigned at the center of the art world in those days. The Impressionist artists, who emerged under such circumstances, had a huge impact on the people of the time. The artists rushed from their studio out into the open air, and employing a new method of 鈥渄ivided brushstrokes鈥� placed without mixing the paints into compound colors, they tried to capture the momentary flicker of commonplace things. Impressionism was to have a considerable impact not only on the West but on the Japanese Western-style painting circles, too.
