Caring For Animals鈥enefiting People

30 Jul, 2017 - 27 Aug, 2017
To own a dog is to invite a certain promiscuity into one鈥檚 life: the standard protocols of urban life, in which eye contact and, of course, bodily contact, are avoided seem to dissolve in the presence of a dog. As such, dogs provide us with an opportunity to reflect on the economies of affection, of touch and sight, that bring a social body into existence. That body is both human and non-human, since dogs serve as a pretext for intra-human intercourse, and as we will gladly suffer the presence of a human owner in order to pet the right dog. One dog in particular, Penny Bananabones finds herself conscripted as muse, collaborator, and (possibly) another pretext for a group show at Jeffrey Stark, in which thirty six artists reflect on Penny, her owner, Kalena Yiaueki, and the world which all of them share. Prompted by her own interest in how Penny shifted the balance of social and romantic relations in her own life, Yiaueki invited this group of friends, all of whom are well-acquainted with Penny, to contribute small works centered on her. This freewheeling show explores the intimacy between animals and humans, the anomie of urban life as a single woman, and the ways in which a dog serves as an entr茅e into a whole way of life.
