Chagall. A cry for freedom
Marc Chagall (1887-1985), whose life spanned two world wars and an exile, left a body of work deeply rooted in the history of the 20th century. Embodiment of rootlessness and migration, like so many figures in his work, the artist moved around the world at the mercy of the upheavals of his century, from his childhood in White Russia to France, from Germany to Palestine and from the United States to Mexico, before settling by the Mediterranean. This exhibition, the result of a collaboration between La Piscine 鈥 Mus茅e d鈥橝rt et d鈥橧ndustrie Andr茅 Diligent, (Roubaix), Fundaci贸n MAPFRE and the Mus茅e national Marc Chagall in Nice, presents the artist鈥檚 work in the light of the historical events he witnessed, thus becoming the first complete reading of his production from the perspective of his stances and his humanist socio-political commitment.
