Color Construction: Keith Haring and Damien Hirst
Guy Hepner is thrilled to announce our first fall exhibition Color Construction opening on September 12th. The show will highlight the profound visual languages created by Artists Damien Hirst and Keith Haring throughout both of their oeuvres. Through their uses of vibrant colors, color blocking, iconography, and systematic compositions, Haring and Hirst create universal systems of visual language.
Most-known for his iconic line-drawings of human figures, babies, and dogs, Haring was fascinated by patterns and color combinations. Haring鈥檚 body of work focused on the creative principles of graffiti, as well as semiotics from which he developed his visual language built of colors and simple lines. Throughout his work, Haring frequently juxtaposed warm and cool tones and employed bright, artificial colors in order to capture the attention of his viewers, encouraging them to engage with the often deeply meaningful subject matter. Not only do his drawings and colorful figures have universal commercial appeal, they also allude to crucial themes of politics, war, AIDS, sexuality among others.
Throughout his career, British artist Damien Hirst has fashioned multi-colored paintings inspired by the Impressionist movement, such as his most recognized series 鈥淪pot Paintings鈥� where he aimed to create structure using colors, 鈥淢athematically, with the spot paintings, I probably discovered the most fundamentally important thing in any kind of art. Which is the harmony of where color can exist on its own, interacting with other colors in a perfect format.鈥� explained Hirst. Color is often the subject of Hirst鈥檚 works, as he expresses interest in the juxtaposition and experimentation of composition and hues. Through painting, Hirst has been able to discover the 鈥渉armony where color can exist on its own, interacting with other colors in a perfect format鈥�.
鈥淗ow can you not love color?鈥� Hirst wrote. 鈥淚 was always a colorist, I鈥檝e always had a phenomenal love of colors鈥 mean I just move color around on its own.鈥�
