David Hockney: Fresh Flowers

20 Oct, 2010 - 30 Jan, 2011
The Fondation Pierre Berg茅 - Yves Saint Laurent presents new digital creations by David Hockney through three media: iPhone, iPad and digital projections. The exhibition meets the original design intended by the artist: images bright and colorful on-screen support. The initial images have been created for and emailed to friends, and Hockney will occasionally send new "fresh flowers" to the Foundation for the duration of the event.

Hockney began work with the iPhone in 2008, and his discovery of various applications, "Brushes" in particular, enabled him to produce works of extraordinary diversity. Since then he has created hundreds of images, including plants, self-portraits, still lifes and landscapes, but in the representation dazzling cut flowers and plants, the theme of this exhibition, he pushed for further exploration of its technical possibilities of the medium. Hockney created his pictures with his thumbs and fingers on the screen of the device by changing the colors and layering brush strokes of different widths and thicknesses. An animation will allow visitors to follow the process of creating one or more "flowers" from beginning to end. A slideshow of 8 to 10 minutes under a triptych by the artist, will be projected onto a large screen floating.

David Hockney is a longtime friend of the two men behind the Foundation "The Fondation Pierre Berg茅-Yves Saint Laurent is delighted to present this major exhibition by the innovative artist that Yves and I admired and appreciated for a long time, "said Pierre Berg茅. Yves Saint Laurent presented the prestigious artistic distinction Rosa d'Oro in 2004 to David Hockney, making the link further from a long line of famous artists including Henri Cartier-Bresson Jorge Borges, Pierre Boulez, IM Pei, and the sculptor Eduardo Chillida. In October 1987, Yves Saint Laurent paid tribute to David Hockney in the final parade Rive Gauche collection (loan to-wear), with a "lap" inspired sets and costumes designed by Hockney for Parade, a set of three French operas presented that year at the Metropolitan Opera.
