Delwin Cheah: Freedom - oxygen of the soul

18 Jun, 2022 - 30 Jun, 2022

MEET artist extraordinaire has painted several insightful works of art despite being diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, which is a form of autism. Despite this disorder, 19 years old Delwin Cheah Wien Loong continues to amaze his circle of family, friends, and a growing list of admirers. Young people with Asperger's Syndrome have a difficult time relating to others socially and their behavior and thinking patterns can be rigid and repetitive. But this has not stopped the Penang - born artist from honing his skills as an artist.

A daydreamer who likes to dream, he likes to share his tale of fortitude and his incredible journey which began when he was just three - years old. When he was 9 years old, one of his masterpieces was flown to the United Nations building in New York under the Strokes of Genius Art Exhibition in conjunction with World Autism Awareness. Delwin has held many exhibitions since then and holds the world record of 鈥淲orld Youngest Savant Artist to hold Solo Art Exhibition鈥, awarded by Record Setter, USA. He is also Malaysia鈥檚 Book of Records' Youngest Artist to Hold a Solo Visual Art Exhibition as well as Malaysia鈥檚 Book of Records 2014 Most Outstanding Personality (Art Category). Delwin鈥檚 artwork has been presented to world leaders, and he has received letters of appreciation from both the President of the United States, Barack Obama, and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of England.

From an adolescent age, Cheah loves nature, and he knows about the plight of endangered animals. With his perseverance in supporting wildlife, Cheah partnered with the Worldwide Fund Malaysia (WWF) to design a 鈥淢alayan Tiger鈥 on limited edition t-shirts to raise funds for the world's largest conservation of wildlife. Cheah was announced as the new icon of Malaysia or "Ikon Negaraku鈥 by the Malaysian Government at one of its national unity platforms. He had set up HUKU Tigers Awareness movement with his family and to spread the awareness about the Malayan Tigers through the schools."

To Cheah, the intent and purpose of his art are to show the beauty of the world through his art. He wants to be different from other artists where he sees things differently and dares to paint with his feelings rather than just being taught about them. He further added, "I feel the world is so beautiful and I want to tell everyone about it through my drawings and paintings." He mainly focused on animals such as zebras, horses, tigers, lions, and those animals mainly from the African Safari. His love for animals from Africa is boundless. Cheah draws from his imagination and allows his creation to run wild just like the wild animals. He is given all the freedom to draw what he likes from his dotting parents.
