Eighteen by Twelve: Recent Photographic Acquisitions

07 Feb, 2011 - 01 Sep, 2011
The National Portrait Gallery is a visual reflection of contemporary British life and culture. Every year the Gallery acquires a diverse selection of contemporary photographs. This selection of eighteen subjects by twelve contemporary photographers represents a much larger group of images acquired by the Gallery in the last year. The sitters included in this display are drawn from popular science, through comedy and art, to contemporary pop music.

The photographers represented in this display range from one of the acknowledged masters of portrait photography, David Bailey, to younger photographers such as Kate Peters. After graduating in photography from Falmouth College of Arts, Peters spent four years working as an assistant to Nadav Kander before starting her own freelance career with work regularly published in the Telegraph Magazine. Other noted photographers include Richard Cannon, known for his commissions for The Times, and Richard Saker whose photographs regularly appear in the Observer. Fergus Greer, represented by his informal study of HRH Prince William and HRH Prince Harry, started his career by assisting Terence Donovan and Richard Avedon before establishing his own practice in London and the United States.
