End of Century
Globalization and industrialization prompted a period of immense artistic experimentation and production in the late 19th century. Commonly grouped under the term Art Nouveau, the styles that emerged throughout Europe and the United States during this time share an appreciation of the natural world, a rejection of traditionalism, and a desire to unite the fine and applied arts. Primarily composed of glassware, decorative art, and works on paper, this exhibition highlights how these previously under-appreciated art forms gained popularity at the turn of the century, echoing the larger interests and ambitions of the era.
This exhibition is drawn from the PMA鈥檚 permanent collection and the collection of Dr. Patrick M. Rowe. Special thanks to Dr. Rowe for his generous contribution to this exhibition and his ongoing
鈥媠upport of the museum.
