Frederic Tuten: Flowers, Plants and Other Romances

Frederic Tuten (b. 1964) grew up in the Bronx and later lived in South America and Paris, where he taught film and literature at the University of Paris 8. Tuten has written five novels, including The Adventures of Mao on the Long March (1971),Tallien: A Brief Romance (1988), Tintin in the New World: A Romance (1993), Van Gogh鈥檚 Bad Caf茅 (1997), and The Green Hour (2002). He has written about art, literature and film in Art Forum, The New York Times, Vogue; was an actor in an Alain Resnais movie; taught with Paul Bowles in Morocco; and co-wrote the cult-classic Possession.

Tuten studied as an undergrad at the City College of New York. He then studied art history at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, and then earned a PhD in 19th-century American literature from New York University. He has earned three Pushcart Prizes for fiction, an O鈥橦enry Prize for a short story, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the Award for Distinguished Writing from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Tuten鈥檚 memoir My Young Life was published by Simon & Schuster in March 2019.
