Friction of Ideas: Van Gogh, Gauguin, Bernard
When Ordrupgaard opens its major spring exhibition next February, it will be with world-class art on the walls. The special exhibition Friction of Ideas: Van Gogh, Gauguin, Bernard is the museum鈥檚 most ambitious venture in recent times, and will feature exceptional works by two of the greatest names in art history, Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin, as well as by their mutual friend and fellow painter, the young artist genius 脡mile Bernard.
At the exhibition, Ordrupgaard focuses sharply on some of the greatest personalities in the art world. The exhibition tells the story of the dramatic events brought about by the many discussions and disagreements between the three artists. It is the tale of a clash between two very different artistic ideals 鈥 a conflict that had fatal consequences, and, as is well known, culminated in the severing of Van Gogh鈥檚 ear in the fateful year of 1888 at the legendary Yellow House in Arles. The friendship and especially the disagreements between the three artists set their stamp on the history of art, and are illuminated in this exhibition of more than 60 works 鈥 most of them from 1888 鈥 painted by Van Gogh, Gauguin and Bernard in Paris, Brittany and Arles.
