Hidden Treasures Unveiled: Watercolors
Hidden Treasures Unveiled: Watercolors is the inaugural exhibition in PAFA鈥檚 new Richard C. von Hess Foundation Works on Paper Gallery. The exhibition presents a group of watercolors from the 18th through the 21st century, drawn from the Museum鈥檚 extensive collection of works on paper that have remained little-known to the public.
The exhibition includes virtuoso examples of the genre and dazzling celebratory color. Among the highlights are Benjamin West鈥檚 Portrait of Prince Octavius (1783), William Trost Richards鈥 Seascape with Foreground Rocks (1874), and Winslow Homer鈥檚 North Road, Bermuda (1900), as well as Stuart Davis鈥 Sand Cove (c. 1931), Robert Motherwell鈥檚 Lyric Suite (1965), Gladys Nilsson鈥檚 鈥淚 Don鈥檛 Remember What the Name Is鈥 Duckbird Blues? (1968), and a selection of works by Richard Tuttle.
By making the exhibition鈥檚 focus watercolor and other water-based mediums, PAFA is able to present superb examples of one aspect of the collection, and show the wide range of approaches that artists took towards the medium.
