In the Picture: Overpainted Photography

For many years painting and photography vied for predominance. Today, the competition that arose from photography鈥檚 artistic self-assertion has long become irrelevant. And this is precisely why the renaissance of the overpainting of photographs in the recent past may surprise us. Why has there been an increase in painterly reworked photography in recent years? Have the media boundaries of the image genres now been completely abandoned? Can the renaissance of the manual in the field of photography perhaps even be interpreted as a reaction to the experience of digitisation? Bringing together Florian Merkel (*1961), Peter Klare (*1969), Shannon Bool (*1972), Sabrina Jung (*1978), Anna Vogel (*1981) and Helen Feifel (*1983), this first overview exhibition concentrates on a new generation that, after the photo boom of the 1990s, has developed the image further into a hybrid form in masterly fashion. The exhibition comprises around 80 works.
