Inspirations from the East

04 Oct, 2014 - 01 Feb, 2015

The late 19th and early 20th centuries witnessed an explosion of interest in all things Japanese that prompted a radical shift in modern art.  Drawn from The DAI's permanent collection, Inspirations from the East illuminates the myriad ways that American and European artists responded to their new exposure to Japanese art and culture. It pairs the works with Japanese ukiyo-e prints, with their unusual points of view and asymmetrical compositions with decorative patterning and delicate colors - all of which made them a revelation to Western artists trained to order the world around them according to single-point perspective.
