Jorge Rojas: Coyotek
Coyotek is a solo exhibition by Mexican American artist Jorge Rojas composed of a site-specific corn mandala (a geometric configuration of symbols), interactive installations, photography, and a selection of performance videos created over the past two decades. The exhibition surveys Rojas鈥 inventive, thought-provoking, and frequently political work emerging from a diverse artistic practice. His creative process is inspired by spiritual histories, abuses of power, interpretations of ancient rites, Indigenous knowledge, and human interconnectedness.
The title, Coyotek, is a playful neologism. This newly formed word blends the words coyote and technology to reflect an identity and aesthetic woven from Rojas鈥 interest in borders and immigration policy through his own multicultural immigrant experience. Colloquially, a coyote is known as a guide for immigrants across the Mexico鈥揢S border.
The totality of Coyotek fosters transcultural dialogue and community engagement. As part of the exhibition programming, Rojas will present a live performance, an artist talk, and lead a community workshop during the museum鈥檚 Dia de los Muertos event on November 2, 2024.
