Nelly Schm眉cking鈥檚 (1984) animal sculptures are naturalist and artificial at the same time. Her intention in each piece is to form an equivalent to the natural role model. Quite frequently her aesthetic style is compared with August Gaul (1869 鈥 1921). But a century of progress lies between her creations and Gaul鈥檚 works 鈥 in anthropology, zoology und art. The MdbK is showcasing this exciting and contrasting relationship in an exhibition for which Schm眉cking specifically created two lions and a monumental European hare standing several metres tall.
