Perpendicularity by Mark Indig

13 Sep, 2008 - 20 Oct, 2008
鈥淧erpendicularity鈥, Miami first solo exhibition by Award 鈥揥inning Photographer: Mark Indig. Show opens Saturday, September 13 7:30 P.M. at Dot Fiftyone Gallery, 51 NW 36 Street in Miami鈥檚 Wynwood Art District, during the Wynwood Gallery Walk. Dot Fiftyone Gallery presents 鈥淧erpendicularity鈥 a new body of work from LA 鈥 based mid 鈥 career photographer Mark Indig. Civilization is all about creating order out of chaos. We build structures and environments that make us feel like things are organized and safe. Those are the places Mark Indig likes to shoot, by being close enough to remove the clutter and distractions around them. What鈥檚 left are the essential shapes and colors that are a universal reflection of man鈥檚 hopes, fears, successes and failures. Indig sees these elements in almost a musical language of themes, styles and tempos. He is most interested in the in-between places; those likely to be redeveloped, restored, repainted, rebuilt, fixed up, torn down or paved over. The places between the new downtown and the old downtown; between downtown and the suburbs; between the suburbs and the farms. The places that have little chance of looking the same or even existing 5 years from now. 鈥淧erpendicularity鈥 is a study of vertical spaces, colors, shapes, textures, scale and typography perpendicular to our line of sight, but nevertheless a bit of center. The images are from obscure commercial and unintentional beauty. It is worth keeping your eyes and mind open when going the back way to the airport or to buy discount hardware or a used car. Concurrently with becoming an award-winning fine art photographer specializing in urban landscapes, Indig has also risen in the ranks of the motion picture world. He has worked as Studio Executive (Disney, Universal), a Production Manager (鈥淭he Village鈥, 鈥淭he Guardian鈥 and the upcoming 鈥淭ropic Thunder鈥) and Producer (Miramax). He even worked on the Oscar-winning classic Titanic. But it was his early years as feature film location manager that informed his photographic eye, giving him a unique perspective on the urban landscape, and a very cinematic style of interpreting it. For 15 years Indig traveled locally around the USA and internationally to fine places to film movies like Body Heat and The Big Chill. His mission was always to find locations that evoke a sense of memory in the audience; that summed up a character of created a mood or told a story. Through his location-finding adventures, he developed a skill for the art of getting lost, which allowed him to follow his nose no matter how far off the original path. The job required he photograph these locations ina way that people sometimes thousand miles away could see not only the appearance of the place, but also its soul. Mark Indig was born in New York City and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. Perpendicularity exhibitions will be on through October 20, 2008 in Dot Fiftyone Gallery, 51 NW 36th Street, in the Wynwood Art District. Following the September 13 opening reception, gallery hours are Monday - Friday 12:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Saturdays 2:00 pm.- 6:00 p.m. The exhibition is open to the public and private viewings are available by appointment.
