Sami Mandee: High Water
So I fed myself, as you would a machine, or a cow, with one thousand scans of ancient cuneiform tablets taken from institutional archives, taken from someplace else. The lack of catharsis I uncovered in what was essentially a massive repository of ancient receipts and customer reviews motivated me to investigate the collection for uncommon denominators.
The presence of fingerprints from the original scribes was so rare, that I concluded they were hasty errors in form. The idea of showing four millennia old mistakes became relevant.
Bodies and artefacts traverse borders or are denied airport entry. Simultaneously, meaning accretes and sloughs off as objects are smuggled, museum-loaned, digitized or repatriated. Enclosed in archival quality inert packaging material or in fuselage they enter into a vibrant congress of itinerancy.
Through the extraction and re-appropriation of administrative documents, through material transformations, through identity work and the employment diasporic tactics, new narratives emerge.
