SMOG is an experimental exhibition following a trip to Shanghai made by a group of visual artists, writers, and curators, who search for an artistic catharsis of their shared travel experience. From 16 to 18 March at Arthill Gallery, SMOG will function as a forum for new productions by international contributors.
Smog denotes a fog infused with the pollutants generated by hyper-urbanisation and intense fast-paced production. It coats big metropolitan cities in a hazy, uncanny cloud. It blurs our sight, like technology, unfamiliar language and surveillance choke our agency, autonomy, and authenticity. It turns our experience of contemporary life and culture into one of misty judgement, informed misunderstanding and constant confusion.
SMOG is an artistic exercise on balancing the fickle borders of being alien and total alienation. Those who enter SMOG will experience a carefully staged cultural fog from within. The show features newly produced mixed-media sculptures, sound pieces, photographic installations and video works, accompanied by a public programme of one-off readings and performances. A limited-edition publication further documents the contemporary conditions of alienation and haziness through more personal perspectives.
