The Coldest Winter, a summer group show
鈥淭he coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.鈥� The witty statement is generally attributed to Mark Twain despite the fact that it appears nowhere in his writings. Twain did have a 鈥渢hing鈥� for the weather, arguing that it was 鈥渘ecessary to a narrative of human experience.鈥� Novelists, he felt, should only present 鈥渢he ablest weather that can be had, not ignorant, poor-quality, amateur weather.鈥� Indeed, climates were in his opinion 鈥渁 literary specialty鈥� about which 鈥渘o untrained hand [could] turn out a good article.鈥�
In the JSG South group show, 鈥淭he Coldest Winter,鈥� works by Francis Al每s, Harold Ancart, Chris Bradley, Karel Funk, Mia Goyette, Isaac Julien and Nicole Wermers explore emotional and metaphorical temperatures, atmospheres, environments and microclimates, paying particular attention to the meaning and connotations of the cold.
