The mechanics of monsters. From Carlo Rambaldi to Makinarium

22 Oct, 2019 - 06 Jan, 2020

Carlo Rambaldi (1925鈥2012) was Mr. Special Effects, the man who transformed special effects' very function in the world of film from incidental decor to leading player in their own right. His creations are so widely recognised and so popular that many films actually identify with them: E.T., King Kong and Alien, to mention only a few.

The exhibition will be using material from Rambaldi's private archive, much of it never shown in public before now, to explore the history of Italian and international cinema from the 1960s to the present day while simultaneously shining the spotlight on the Italian artisan tradition as a 'trademark' of guaranteed quality that has always been a constant feature distinguishing our country's master craftsmen in the movie industry.

The exhibition will also document the work of the generations that have come after Rambaldi. The Makinarium group, one of the world's leading firms in the field, will be restoring Rambaldi's work for the occasion and the exhibition will also host a special section devoted to its work for the cinema.
