VI XX: Twenty years of V1 Gallery
20 Years, more than 300 exhibitions, featuring more than 500 artists from around the world. Thousands of visitors. A community. Performances, concerts, screenings, publications, and artist talks. Dancing openings. Outrage, praise, and debate. In the centre of the periphery.
V1 XX 鈥 Twenty years of V1 Gallery gathers some of the artists who have exhibited in V1 Gallery and Eighteen over the past 20 years, artists who we have worked with in the past, those who are currently represented by us, and a selection of artists new to V1 Gallery. The exhibition mainly consists of new works, created for the occasion, in a wide variety of media with a point of departure in the A3 format (420 x 297 mm / 16.5 x 11.7 inches). Considering that points of departure are the best way to get lost, you will of course find lots of works, which do not fit this bill. This eclectic, diverse, and sprawling presentation feels like choir of voices, and a decent metaphor for the long and winding journey that we have been on as a gallery.
There is no doubt that the world is a much different place from when we began. We have strived to transform a small storefront space in Vesterbro to an international platform for contemporary art in Copenhagen, Denmark. While the trajectory of our modern world is unsure, we have found motivation in our core- and founding belief, that art has, and always will have a pivotal place in society. Today, with two separate exhibition spaces, V1 Gallery and Eighteen, we are committed to continue facilitating and disseminating beautiful, vibrant, thoughtful, joyous, critical, and provocative works of human creativity to a wide, international audience. V1 XX 鈥 Twenty years of V1 Gallery is a manifestation of our gratitude towards everyone who has been involved, a celebration of the artists, the art and the community that have been formative in creating and growing V1 Gallery. Past, present and future.
