Andy Warhol: Black & White + Silver

03 Jun, 2019 - 05 Jul, 2019

We are truly delighted to announce our summer exhibition Andy Warhol. Black & White + Silver.

The art of America's most important artist has irrevocably revolutionized artistic perception. Today, more than 30 years after his death, he is still overwhelmingly present, the more so for having created imagery and techniques perfectly suited to our digital age. The current traveling exhibition organized by the Whitney Museum New York is a tremendous success. Young people in particular celebrate Warhol as if he were a contemporary hero, for his visual universe is the embodiment of their own culture. He was, is, and will be a star for generations to come.

Our show focuses on the brief period between 1960 and 1962, a crucial turning-point in Warhol's career when he abandoned a very successful career in commercial art to work as a fine artist. In his earliest body of work, he experimented with both technique and subject matter, using images that had already been published in mass-produced advertisements such as newspapers or telephone books. He painted these very early works freehand, copying the tiny images that he enlarged on canvas with an opaque projector. To banish the painterly handwriting, Warhol increasingly 'purified,' automated, and mechanized the process of making art. Traces of the artist's hand were reduced until little remained of the artistic aura. In 1962 he introduced the photo silkscreen technique, allowing him to become a 'machine' that endlessly repeats the found sources.
