Art & Jewelry

19 Mar, 2018 - 02 Jun, 2018

Custot Gallery Dubai is delighted to present the first artist’s jewelry exhibition in Dubai and in the region, this coming March. From Alexander Calder, Pablo Picasso and Niki de Saint Phalle, through to Anish Kapoor, Marc Quinn, Ron Arad and Pablo Reinoso, many of the greatest artists and designers of the 20th and 21st centuries have turned both their thoughts and talent to jewelry. Bracelets, necklaces, earrings, rings, these art creations cover the entire spectrum of jewelry. Often imagined as a proof of love, these artists’ jewels were originally intended for their families and close ones.

Through a selection of unique pieces and limited editions in gold, silver and bejeweled works, the most important European and American artists will be exhibited, as well as four major artists from the Middle East: Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian, Sahand Hesamiyan, Pouran Jinchi and Nadim Karam.

With the artist’s paintings, sculptures and works on paper presented in dialogue with their jewelry pieces, the exhibition highlights how accents of the artworks can be found in the jewelry. Like his sculpture, Anish Kapoor’s jewelry plays with ideas of depth and perception using yellow and white gold and coloured enamel in various combinations to create the effects of illusion. As with Alexander Calder, who sculpted more than 1,800 unique jewelry works throughout his life, his creations recall tribal and African elements in art, and his use of their symbols in his gouaches and mobiles followed through to his jewelry making. The exhibition brings together over 80 pieces of jewelry and 20 works of art.
