Jason Trotter: Interaction
INTERACTION, a new exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist Jason Trotter, features nine geometric abstracts that mark a significant evolution in the artist鈥檚 practice. Known for his use of bold, monochromatic forms spread across three joined canvases, Trotter鈥檚 work has long emphasized the balance of color and form. This new work is guided by a deeper inquiry into the perception of these elements and how they interact.
Josef Albers鈥 seminal text Interaction of Color and the color theory investigations of his Homage to the Square series shaped Trotter鈥檚 approach to this new work. 鈥淎lbers demonstrated that color is not static 鈥 it behaves in relation to its surroundings,鈥 explains Trotter. 鈥滱fter engaging more deeply with his teachings, I was inspired to take a new approach to my practice, making color pairings integral.鈥
INTERACTION is the result. The new works are layered with multiple color fields 鈥 the independent fields are confined to a single canvas and are applied as a kind of chromatic echo of the central form. They function visually as a shadow but conceptually as a counterpoint. Collectively, they help to both ground and amplify the overall composition.
Jason Trotter is an American painter recognized for bold geometric abstracts. A graduate of Northern Illinois University, Trotter is a self-taught painter whose practice brings a fresh perspective to the traditions of minimal, hard-edged abstraction. Based in Los Angeles, where he works from his home studio, Trotter continues to refine a visual language rooted in the exploration of color and form.
