The Art Of Tomorrow Today

Mar 07, 2009 - Oct 11, 2009
The Henie Onstad Art Centre’s collection, which has grown from the collection originally donated to the Art Centre by Sonja Henie and Niels Onstad, now comprises over 4000 works covering most of the 20th century and representing a diversity of artistic idioms and techniques. The works selected for this exhibition exemplify the trends inherent in the donators’ core collection. Today, Sonja Henie’s and Niels Onstad’s collection is regarded as a historical documentation of a particular epoch in the history of Norwegian art collections. It is also an important part of our nation’s collection of 20th century international art, establishing as it did a framework for international modernism in Norway. Due to Henie Onstad’s generous donation, the collection was made accessible to the public through the opening of the Henie Onstad Art Centre in 1968. As a result, it is precisely this collection that to a large extent has influenced our understanding of Norwegian and international contemporary art. Over the years since its inauguration, the Art Centre at Høvikodden has functioned as a focal art institution internationally and as a centre for modernism in Norway. For the very first time, the Henie Onstad art collection is the subject of a major book THE ART OF TOMORROW TODAY, and the current exhibition focuses on the works featured in the book – works by leading artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Miro, Leger, Gris, Klee, Villon, Dubuffet, Bazaine, Riopelle, Jorn and Weidemann. The book is written by the director of the Art Centre, Karin Hellandsjø, and published by the international publisher SKIRA EDITORE. It is already available in the Art Centre’s bookshop and will be on sale in international bookshops all over the world from the autumn. In addition, this exhibition features key works from the Lilja Collection, which has been in store at Høvikodden for several years and is a unique collection of American pop art, including works by Frank Stella, Robert Rauschenberg, David Hockney, Jim Dine and Jasper Johns. These American works, together with American art from the Art Centre’s own collection of Andy Warhol and Christo, reveal the wide scope of this section of the collection. As of March 2009 and for several years ahead, one of the Art Centre’s exhibition areas - The Haaken Hall - will be used to present different sections of the Art Centre’s collection each year, but with certain parts of the core collection permanently on display.Welcome to exciting encounters with our art collection!
