Ulla Diedrichsen: Herself Now

07 Nov, 2025 - 19 Dec, 2025

Charlotte Fogh Gallery proudly presents Ulla Diedrichsen鈥檚 first solo exhibition at the gallery, Herself Now 鈥 an exhibition that brings together brand new works created in 2025. Here, the Danish visual artist shows an abstract and renewed expression, where experience and experiment meet in a vital visual language. Ulla Diedrichsen has for more than half a century made her mark as one of the most significant figures in Danish contemporary art. She was the first female Danish artist to have a solo exhibition at ARoS Kunstmuseum 鈥 a retrospective in 2005 鈥 and has since had an extensive international career, which includes a stay at Warhol鈥檚 legendary Factory in the 1980s and collaborations with the Vienna Actionists. Her work ranges widely: from total installations and art integrated into architecture to literary projects and public art commissions.

In Herself Now, Diedrichsen unites materiality and energy in a new visual expression. The works move between contrasts 鈥 from rough cement-like texture to smooth metallic surfaces, from violent discharges to delicate graphic traces. Spontaneity meets precision, and the characteristic 鈥渟cratches鈥 鈥 fingerprints in the paint 鈥 testify to a physical and present creative process. The result is images that vibrate between freedom and control, order and chaos.

The exhibition is accompanied by the small publication Herself H氓ndholdt 鈥 a logbook from the studio, where the artist鈥檚 own statements and handwritten notes accompany each work. Here, the viewer is invited to get up close to the process and thoughts behind the works 鈥 an intimate insight into Diedrichsen鈥檚 artistic universe.

As an artist, Ulla Diedrichsen continues to be preoccupied with change and development. She cites Willumsen鈥檚 鈥渓aw of exceptions鈥 as a guideline: always to challenge form, experiment and exceed the boundaries of media. In Herself Now, she resumes threads from her early all-over painting and mixes them with contemporary reflections on control and dissolution 鈥 a mirror of a time when the world is measured, assessed and at the same time losing its firm ground. With Herself Now, Ulla Diedrichsen shows herself as both an experienced artist and an innovator 鈥 an artist who insists on being herself in the present.
