Will Rogan: Remnant World

The camera and its relationship to the world is a complicated subject that artist Will Rogan takes on in a variety of ways. Over the years, he has chronicled behavioral epiphanies and urban juxtapositions using color photography and video. With Remnant World, he addresses the conundrum of being in the world while simultaneously trying to view and document it.
In contrast to the large digital prints that dominate contemporary photography, Rogan offers small silver gelatin prints titled Other Worlds, each one showing a storefront whose signage declares that inside is a massive inventory of remnants, vacuums, leather, awnings, or other items. The artist is interested in the photograph as an object with presence, as well as the store as a place that promises both compartmentalization and completeness. A video work, Time Machine (Destroyer), depicts a slow motion camera flash that has been extended from fractions of one to 20 seconds, and a recent hanging sculpture features crystals surrounding an intense light bulb, hung at eye level and blinding to look at. These various works continue Rogan鈥檚 investigation of time, seeing, and understanding.
Rogan lives and works in Albany, California. His work has been exhibited at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and Jack Hanley Gallery, all in San Francisco, CA; Small a Projects, New York, NY; Diverse Works Project Space, Houston, TX; Mills College Art Museum, Oakland, CA; and Mori Art Museum, Tokyo. He is co-editor (with Jonn Herschend), of THE THING Quarterly, a periodical in the form of an object.
