Known as one of the most significant members of the Viennese Secession, or Austrian Artists Union, Gustav Klimt set himself apart from other artistsof his group through his symbolic and erotic work. One of his most well known works of art is entitled, "The Kiss". With its mosaic-like technique and use of various mediums, including gold leaf, Klimt successfully captured the essence of a kiss as being an all encompassing experience. Klimt's "Portrait of Adele Bloch Bauer II" is also notoriously known for a high profile international case that involved Bloch Bauer's niece Maria Altmann. Altmann managed to reclaim her aunt's portrait, which was looted from the Nazis during WWII and reappeared in the Austrian State Gallery after the war ended. The painting, considered the "Mona Lisa of Vienna", was sold at Christie's in New York for $88 million becoming the fourth highest-priced artwork sold at auction.
